Broadway When You’re Not Drinking (And Still Want to Be There)

You’re on Broadway and you’re not drinking. Could be sober for the long haul, pregnant, on antibiotics, the designated driver, or just want a night off. Broadway is built around drinking, but the night still works if you know where to go.

The baseline

The bands on Broadway play whether you’re drinking or not. The music is the actual product. If you’re there for the music, you can have a real Broadway night without alcohol.

Bars that serve real mocktails

Bar Rōka, 1904 Broadway. The zero-proof menu is genuinely good. The best mocktail bar on or near Broadway.

Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar. Serious cocktail program extends to mocktails.

The Patterson House (Gulch). Among the best cocktail bars in the city. The mocktail menu is real.

The Oak Bar at the Hermitage. Classic hotel bar. Phony Negroni or any non-alcoholic classic with real attention.

Honky-tonk strategy

The honky-tonks don’t have mocktail programs. They have water, soda, juice, maybe a Shirley Temple.

Order club soda with lime. Looks like a vodka soda. $3-$4. Most bartenders don’t blink. You hold a glass, listen to the band. Nobody knows.

30-40 minutes per honky-tonk. The standing-and-listening is the experience. Move to the next bar after that.

A sober Broadway night

6 PM Bar Rōka mocktail. 7 PM Acme food + club soda. 8 PM Robert’s club soda + $10 band tip. 8:45 PM Layla’s. 9:30 PM Bourbon Street for an actual zero-proof cocktail. Four hours, five bars, $50-$70.

Things that get easier sober

You can hear the band better. You move between bars faster. Bartenders engage more (they trust the conversation will land). You can drive home. You wake up tomorrow.

Things that get harder

The bar economy assumes drinking. You may need to over-tip on the $4 club soda to signal you’re a real customer. Group dynamics shift if your group is at three drinks deep. The 11 PM hour in a 110-decibel honky-tonk hits different sober.

Non-Broadway moves

Country Music Hall of Fame. Ryman tour. Cumberland River walk at night. Coffee in East Nashville. Bowling at Pinewood Social. Music shows at the Ryman or Listening Room Cafe.

The bar staff has seen everything

You won’t surprise anyone by ordering a soda. The judgment you’re worried about isn’t coming from them.

Bottom line

Sober Broadway works in five bars: Bar Rōka, Acme, Robert’s, Layla’s, Bourbon Street. Club soda at honky-tonks, real mocktails at cocktail bars. Tip well. 45-minute stops. End at midnight.

Drink the soda. Hear the band. The music doesn’t know the difference.
